Wooden Bench Vise

This was a project I worked on while at my old school. I was able to use the resources of their makerspace to manufacture the project. Linked below is an instructables page with more information on the build process.

Reflections

There were three main aspects to this project which I really enjoyed. Primarily, while there are certainly more practical designs, this was a very functional build, and it does actually work as designed. Secondly, this project allowed me to think about using wood in some creative ways with aspects such as the jaws being designed quite uniquely in a sort of laminate. Lastly, this project let me use some tools I don't normally use like a CNC router to precisely shape most of my parts.

A few challenges I ran into include difficulties with threading, and problems with assembly. I found that while the wood I used was very easy to tap a clean thread, there were significant issues with using a die to cut the threaded rod. In the future I might replace the rod with one made from acrylic or another wood that cuts better. With assembly, I ran into the issue of having a unstable set of parts that were very difficult to clamp while working on them. In hindsight, I could have extended some of the surfaces a bit more which would have made the process a lot easier.
